Q & A with Our Expert

Our Cosmetic Biochemist, who recently began to experience the world of self-tanning, has been formulating high performance skin care products for the past 15 years. Curious about the formulations in the eye-catching gaudy packaging, and upon reading the ingredient list, and to her horror, Proplylene Glycol, an ingredient know in the cosmetic world as one of the worst solvents to use on your body, was in the upper percentile on these products! Looking at every package, every label, every ingredient, and these formulations were among the worst she has ever seen. All of the glamourous ingredients were listed below the 1% line, meaning most are sprinkled in the batch. Also, the self tanning performance actives, Dihydroxyacetone and Erythrulose, were well below the recommended 5-6% use level. Upon asking the pretty young lady at the front desk for pricing, and she nearly fainted when the price of these formulations were over $100 a bottle! "My money is better spent on the $5 Jergen lotions sold at Walgreens."

Out of all the consumer classes, the person who tans will have a more compromised lipid barrier than most. This means that the lotions and creams they put on their skin should replenish and nourish the skin, especially the upper-most layer, your Stratum Corneum. In addition to working as a Supervisor of Research & Development for a private label manufacturer, our Biochemist also taught classes at UCLA Extension for Cosmetic Science, and knows the good, the bad and the ugly ingredients. The packages sure may look glamourous but the inside of the package was anything but.

At Organic Tan, our goal is to develop a line of indoor tanning lotions and treatment products that are just as powerful as the DHA/Erythrulose chemical combo, but made from all-natural Organic sources. These will be formulated with Organic oils and extracts to protect the skin, using only the gentlest emulsifiers, all-natural hydrators, and free-radical scavengers for the ultimate in healthy, organic deep tanning.
